Dizzy

That is great…  I've had a look at the Bored Teenagers page, nothing awry there, the one exception being Edwards interview in which he claimed we were all sacked after becoming " too big for our boots".

After Action Replay our A&R guy suggested Light Entertainment as a follow up. I remember saying to him that it was an odd choice as it had no conventional chorus.. He said we could insert the play out throughout the song as it was a great chorus… I rejected the suggestion determinedly as I wrote the song deliberately to not repeat in a conventional way… Perhaps this was construed as being egotistical, i thought I was being principled.

At the same time Martin was suggesting that we see documentation of where our 28 thousand advance had gone. We had seen none of it after all…

Keith then started calling saying Jimmy couldn't write and was fed up and thinking of quitting and how did we feel about it.. We both said we would carry on without him and find another singer… Next  he called saying Jimmy had left and Mark wasn't interested in continuing so it was all over….

A week or so later I see an ad in Melody Maker, Masterswitch seek new guitar/ drums… I go down there and there's Jimmy and Mark playing with John Ellis from the Vibrators and a skinhead drummer. Jimmy is highly embarrassed and claims Keith told him we wanted to replace him in the band and this is all an act of self preservation.. Whatever the real behind the scenes manoeuvring both Mark and Jimmy instantly throw in the towel..  Our manager seizes much of our equipment claiming CBS want it back… A year later I come across some of it bought from a shop in Surrey ( just down the road from where Keith lived )…

All pretty pathetic tawdry stuff really… Comes down to the fact we weren't close enough as individuals to talk frankly with one another although I always felt the real nail in the coffin was having the audacity to enquire where the money had gone...

At this point I join up with Ian North in Neo and Mark comes with me…

Hi Dizzy

Hope all well with you.

The album as appears on your label was actually two demo sessions. First session was a studio in Cambridge and the second was at CBS Studios in Whitfield Street London, ( now Whitfield Street Studios).

We had signed with CBS/Epic and they wanted demos for the first album. All of the songs were recorded live and are all first or second takes. So what you hear is really the live set. There was no more action (little pun) from CBS and no acetates etc.
CBS picked up on the Clash (at the same time) and didn't continue promoting us.

If you delve into the music you'll discover many complex rhythms, timings and unusual figures. We were really a rock band but Jimmy very much wanted to join the punk/new wave movement. We rehearsed seven hours a day, five days a week apart from gigging!!

When I have a moment I'll send you a listing of which tracks were recorded where although it is easy to tell which were recorded at CBS as the quality is hugely improved especially on the drum sound.

Those live pics were at a gig with Sham 69 at I think Guildford Town Hall in 1978 (again, I think!).....long time ago...

Kind regards

Mart L
