DEAD CLERGY (STREATHAM, SOUTH LONDON) |
|
Paul Howard - VOCALS |
Noel Byrne - GUITAR |
Les Carter - BASS | William Byrne - DRUMS |
The memory is a bit hazy on this one but here's yet another south London punk band formed during the real punk explosion of 1979 now lost to the winds of time.
With a strong local following weekly rehearsals at The Orchestra Pit in Streatham were more like gigs as many a spikey topped stray would cram into the dank hole to hear the teenage angst of Dead Clergy.
A demo tape recorded on the 6th of February 1980 showed promise with the stand out track "Coca Cola Kids" being the great single-that-never-was. As with most local punk acts of the era the band never took off and Les (aka; Fruitbat) left a year later in order to work with Jim Morrison (aka; Jim Bob) of The Ballpoints who also rehearsed at the same studio.
The pair first formed indie popsters Jamie Wednesday but later morphed into drum machine terrors Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, one of the great bands of the early nineties. From little acorns.......
