The Meanies were formed by guitarists Keith Perkis, Steve Gray, and bass guitarist Dave Jenkins, hoping to fuse a 60s sound with new wave energy.
By the summer of 1978, they had relocated to Reading and were soon playing the pubs, clubs, and student halls with their first drummer Colin.
However, Colin decided the Meanies weren't for him, so the band had to record a demo with a borrowed drummer.
Fortunately, Malcolm Oldham was recruited in spring 1979, just in time to record the Vendetta single, Waiting For You / It's True, and the band gigged fairly regularly until its release the following year.
In spite of generous play on the local radio, and further gigs locally and in London, the record failed to generate much interest, and in August 1980, Keith announced that he'd had enough.
The remaining three limped on for a few months, recording another demo, before parting ways.
