‘Jimmy Pursey’ and I were recording a couple of tracks for ‘Warner Brothers’ at the Polydor Studios just off of Oxford Street, in London. I think it was ‘Seven Hail Mary’s’ and ‘20th Century Time’. The original ‘Pretenders’ were backing us minus Chrissie Hynde so it was Jimmy Honeyman-Scott, Pete Farndon and Martin Chambers. ‘Johnny Rotten’s ‘Public Image’ had just released Public Image on the ‘Virgin’ label and we just kind of Jammed it and came up with these lyrics. ‘Jimmy Pursey’ was great at spontaneous writing, a lot of the Sham 69 stuff was done like that; lyrically done on the spot. So there it was, the Public Pisstake – done and dusted in 3 minutes.
