Martin Cass the guitar player of "Why Control" and co editor of the "Bombsite" fanzine remembers....
Great page for the Toilet's. The feel was spot on.
We were very fond
of those guys back in the day. We actually played with them and watched them on
a few occasion's plus the Clash and Buzzcock's gig's.
Also, interesting that Mark the drummer from "Why Control" was friends with
Chris Harrup, he was a record collector and daytime DJ at Eric's, and we tried
him out as bass player with Why Control. Mark went with the Toilet's and Chris
on their London gig tour, they all piled in the same van. Chris did not know
anything about the London scene or band management, but thought he could get
them gigs. When Mark got back he told me that it was really bad, as the London
Punks just wanted to beat the crap out of these Northerners. I think they
watched a Chelsea gig down there. Mike Peter's was also with us at a Slaughter
and the Dogs concert that ended up with the place surrounded by cops and youths
ready to beat the crap out of the punks. I am having trouble remembering the
venue, I think it was Wigan Casino. It was early in the scene like maybe June
July 77. Mike was also in a bar in Rhyl the night we got into a huge fight. It
is the reason we became friends in the first place. The local Rhyl punkers were
getting some crap from local hillbilly's, and our incident kind of changed the
pattern for the locals. Also we played with Amsterdam over in Ellesmere Port for
a gig, I think it was a local youth group association and part of the Buckley
Contingent set it up.
